Standard of living:
Beah went from celebrating the night with storytelling and dancing to running and hiding from the people who raided his town. The only things left was dead bodies and gun smoke. “Some nights the sky wept stars that quickly floated and disappeared into the darkness before [their] wishes could meet them” (Beah 80), Beah was showing how they would sleep in forests and any place they could find and the only thing they could do was stare up at the stars and wish for someone to help him and his brother. They use to hear stories and be with their family at night but now they were alone. Their standard of living turned into just a sad and unbearable war against every person they killed.
“[They] had not only lost [their] childhood in the war but [their] lives had been tainted by the same experiences that still caused [them] great pain and sadness” (Beah 202), Beah and the fellow child soldiers would kill so much that it became natural to them. Their standard of life had gone way down to the point that child soldiers did whatever the army told them to do. They didn't want to be punished but they didn't want to kill either. Becoming a killer has a lot of strain on children that will haunt them for the rest of their lives.
UNICEF was to educate and give health to many children soldiers to help their standard of living. "...children have the resilience to outlive their sufferings, if given a chance”, said Carol Huang, meaning children can survive what happens to them. In all of the horror child soldiers have gone through, with enough help and security they should be able to find their way back to living the life they dreamed of. After killing, running, and hiding, that the children soldiers should never have gone through, they can now build a new life. They can make their life and resurrect their standard of living.
